While medications are a typically effective way to aid headaches, sometimes it’s not ideal or doesn’t produce the results we want. Headaches can be awful and unbearable. Figure out the cause
The cause could lead you to a better solution. If you think it’s allergy induced, take the allergy medicine of your choice. Other causes of headaches can include stress, neck tension, lack of sleep, etc. Find out what your body needs and take the steps to care for it.
Dehydration is a common cause for headaches, but whether it’s the main factor or not, drinking water can at least stop your headache from getting worse. Often, we don’t even realize we’re dehydrated. Make sure you’re drinking lots of water every day to prevent headaches and migraines.
Dim the lights
Bright lights can be a cause of a headache, or irritate your headache if you already have one. Light-sensitivity is a common cause of headaches due to eye strain. If you have a headache, rest in a dimly lit room and relax your eyes for awhile.
Rest a cold compress on your head
While you’re resting, place a cool compress over your eyes or forehead. This can greatly help with sinus headaches by reducing inflammation. While it may not be a definite cure, it will at least help you relax and provide some temporary comfort.
Give yourself a temple massage
Massaging the temples, or even neck or head, can feel amazing and provide great benefits when you have a headache. Find the pressure points in your head and neck to massage to temporarily calm the pain.
Yoga and meditation can help relieve a headache. Sometimes headaches occur from stress, meaning it’s important to decompress and spend some time away from whatever is bothering us. Yoga and meditation will help shift your focus to your breath and body, relieving tension and finding some peace.
Above all, it’s important to treat your headache and not overwork yourself, as you don’t want to increase the pain. Headaches are a terrible sensation, so do your research to see what may be causing it, and listen to what your body needs. Water and rest is always a great place to start if you’re not sure.
