Books That Aren’t Worth the Hype

As someone who majored in English in college, I’ve read a lot of novels in my day; some for pleasure, some for school. I’ve discovered a lot of books I love over the years, and some that I simply don’t think are worth the hype. There are millions of books in the world to read and not enough time to read all of them. I’ve listed some books that aren’t my favorite and I wouldn’t quite recommend, but please keep in mind these are just my opinions, and it’s alright if you totally disagree! I apologize in advance these are any of your favorite books.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

I’ve read a lot of classics in the day, some in which I love, and some in which I don’t love. To be quite frank, some are simply just too boring.Heart of Darkness is one of them. If you’re able to make it through this book about imperialism without falling asleep, I truly commend you. The only plus side is it’s a rather short novella so it’ll be over before you know it.

Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare

I know Romeo and Juliet for many is a favorite of Shakespeare’s plays, and I understand why. The devoted love between Romeo and Juliet and the tragic ending really captures the emotions of readers/viewers. Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, and simply put, I think there are many he has written that are much better. Nevertheless, it’s a good play (although very over the top), and I understand why people like it. I guess my point here is that it’s not necessarily that Romeo and Juliet is overrated, it’s more that some of Shakespeare’s other plays (that I personally like more) are underrated in comparison.

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

It’s crazy to think that 10 years ago, everyone was raving about Twilight, and now today, it’s rarely mentioned. Twilight was alright at the time, but it doesn’t have the long-lasting effect like popular series’ like Harry Potter. Twilight was a fad that people enjoyed more for Taylor Lautner’s delightful abs rather than the book series itself. I have to admit- I’m not team Edward or Jacob. Let’s face it, the relationships glamorized in this series just doesn’t seem… healthy.

Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James

Let’s face it, the erotic novel is poorly written to the point where it’s almost laughable. Fifty Shades is no more than a subpar fanfic. I’ll admit, I didn’t read the entire series, but only the first novel. Even that I had a hard time making it through. I’d like to believe the rest of the series is a little bit better, but I somehow doubt that.

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks

The Notebook might be the only book ever where I actually prefer the movie. Spoiler alert: the ending in the book isn’t the same; Noah lives on to appear in the sequel, The Wedding. The ending in the Notebook is what ties the whole movie together! I just don’t think the book captures the romance as much as the movie does, and that is not something I say often!

Of course, these are just my opinions, and you should feel free to read whatever books sound interesting to you and form an opinion yourself!

  1. I agree with most of this list! It’s so important to forget the reviews and just read what you love, otherwise it can become such a chore.
